You can spend gold on incremental upgrades like faster attacks or a magnetic aura that sucks in nearby gems, or use gold to unlock new characters. First, you collect gold coins while you play, which are added to an overall total after you die or survive the time limit of a run (at which point you’ll be killed anyway, usually by the grim reaper himself). That’s a lot of strategy to factor from run to run, but there’s even more to plan around for overall progression in the game. Plus, each character has a specific weapon and unique bonuses that change the gameplay tactics. Simply upgrading your first options makes you powerful, but crafting a combination of multiple evolved weapons with equipment bonuses is even more effective. You only have six slots each for weapons and items, so you must plan ahead to get the most effective builds on each run. Evolved weapons present an even bigger jump in power, and in glowing objects flying around the screen, than regular upgrades. The cross boomerang becomes a magic sword. The whip becomes a health-draining whirlwind. For example, you can evolve most weapons when they reach their maximum levels if you have the items they require in your inventory. The weapons and items you collect work together beyond the simple synergy that comes with stat improvements. That sense of progression is incredibly satisfying on its own, but Vampire Survivors layers on strategy, depth, and persistent roguelite elements to make it even better. Each level makes you a little more powerful, until you find yourself ejecting waves of blades and blasts across the screen, shredding the incoming hordes. When you start a run, you toss a paltry axe, dagger, or what-have-you, and desperately try to level up so you can survive. You’ll randomly obtain some of these upgrades by opening chests that drop from boss monsters. Items grant buffs, like letting you attack faster or increasing the duration of a weapon's effect. Selecting a weapon you already have upgrades it, making it either faster, larger, more powerful, or shoot more projectiles. Choosing a new weapon adds it to your arsenal, which means you’ll have an additional type of attack on its own timer. Your character (there are currently over two dozen to choose from) starts with a single weapon and no items, with a total of six available slots for each. When the bar is full, you gain a level and are prompted to select one of three or four random weapons or items. Enemies drop gems as you kill them, and collecting these gems fills an experience bar. Speaking of leveling up, that’s the heart of Vampire Survivors’ deceptive depth. It turns out that Vampire Survivors is an incredibly satisfying game that borders on the dangerously addictive, thanks to its simple concept and deceptively deep mechanics. The game's Castlevania-inspired art, sprites that look like barely modified tracings, doesn’t really improve that first impression. So why are so many Twitch streamers unironically playing Vampire Survivors, a game with an “Overwhelmingly Positive” verdict from more than 85,000 Steam user reviews? It’s a 2D bullet hell game with NES-inspired graphics that's available for purchase via Steam Early Access for $2.99.
